My husband and I have been married for 21 years, and we began our journey in debt due to my student loans. Initially, we struggled with budgeting tips and didn’t live within our means, which led to accumulating more debt. After our second child was born, we decided to take our finances seriously and set up a budget. We worked hard to manage our debt and successfully paid off $30,000 in just three years, all while welcoming our third child during that period. Since then, we have stayed committed to debt management and have remained debt-free. Oh, and I should mention that we've managed to live on one income for 18 and a half years, now raising five kids along with a foster daughter!
My first job was in a grocery store, and I loved being a cashier. Before I turned 18, I was promoted to the office position, where I managed deposits and other office tasks. This experience highlighted my passion for handling money, which has been a consistent theme in my career. Whether it was as a cashier or managing accounts payables and receivables, I have always engaged with personal finance. I even picked up valuable budgeting tips and learned about debt management along the way, which has influenced my approach to personal finance coaching in my subsequent roles.
After the first couple of months of having to redo the checkbook register because my husband recorded an amount wrong, we decided it was best for me to keep track of our finances. This doesn't mean I am in charge of the finances; I just manage the flow of money coming in and going out. My husband knows I enjoy this aspect of personal finance, which is part of the reason he has encouraged me to become a financial coach to help others with budgeting tips and debt management. The other part of it is he knows I love helping people in any way I can.
